City Leaders advise motorists to use caution on potentially icy roadways

ATLANTA – City officials are closely monitoring current weather forecasts, which predict a combination of precipitation and falling temperatures will bring light snow to north and west-central Georgia this evening and overnight. Although no accumulation is expected, the City of Atlanta is well prepared for inclement weather response. City of Atlanta officials are monitoring weather reports for conditions that cause ice, snow, sleet, or other elements that may cause slick or hazardous situations.

Weekend Weather and Tropical Update

Tired of the wedge yet? That east wind that brought in the clouds and cooler air yesterday is sticking with us for a big part of the weekend. We will continue with weather today that will be very similar to what we had yesterday. Expect a good coverage of clouds with only a few thin spots in the clouds at times to allow just a few peeks of sun here and there.

That east wind brings in a shallow layer of cool air at the surface. That will keep our temps in the lower 70s today. Our high yesterday was 72. The wedge will be slow to break. I expect the clouds to hold with us Sunday. We may have a few more breaks in the clouds Sunday which will help temperatures to get up to 75.

DOWNTOWN: Photographer captures time-lapse storm scenes

ATLANTA - As the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee moved across Georgia Labor Day, many people found themselves hunkered down in their homes to avoid the rain and severe weather.

But at least one adventuresome photography enthusiast took to the streets of Downtown Atlanta - determined to capture weather juxtaposed against the city's skyline.

Photographer Tom Wells posted a video on the popular video sharing website Vimeo. "We had some wicked clouds roll through the ATL tonight (9/6/11) along with a few Tornado warnings and accompanying sirens," he said in the video's caption. "While everyone was running for the basement I figured if it was my time to go then it was just my time. So I grabbed the camera and took to my neighborhood streets."

EF1 tornado confirmed in Cherokee County

ATLANTA -- At least one tornado, along with severe storms, ripped through parts of Metro Atlanta Monday, damaging dozens of homes and claiming the life of a Gwinnett County man.

Surveyers from the National Weather Service said a long-tracked EF1 tornado touched down in Woodstock and moved northward some 24 miles before lifting at Ball Ground. Officials said the twister clocked winds at about 90 mph, and at its widest was a quarter-mile wide. Most tornadoes associated with tropical systems like Lee produce very short touchdowns.

Officials said about 400 structures had been affected, and that it was the fifth tornado in Cherokee County over the past four years. County officials said they were lucky that it struck on the holiday with school out of session. School buses would have been on the roads were the storm to happen on a school day.

FORECAST: Lee bringing rain to Metro Atlanta

ATLANTA -- The remnants of Tropical Depression Lee are spreading tropical moisture into Georgia. So far, we've seen mainly light rain south and west of Atlanta. Some of that rain could be heavy at times today.

There is also the potential for some stronger thunderstorms to develop Today. The main threats will be heavy rain and the potential for flooding in some localized areas. Rain totals will be anywhere from 2 to 4 inches and even some higher amounts possible north and west.

The rain totals will depend on the track and speed of what is left of Lee as it moves from Mississippi into Alabama. We will have more updates with any changes.

Drought spreads into North Georgia

ATLANTA -- Georgia's state climatologist says extreme drought conditions have now spread into North Georgia and cover most of the state south of the mountains.

Climatologist David Stooksbury says all of Georgia's counties are now classified as being in moderate, severe or extreme drought.

In his most recent reports on the drought, Stooksbury said the outlook for relief in the short-term is not promising. Unless Georgia sees some tropical weather over the next few months, the state can expect below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures.

Without tropical rain, Georgia's soil is expected to continue to dry out. Stream flows, groundwater levels and reservoir levels are expected to continue to drop, and wildfire potentials are expected to remain high to extreme.
