Atlanta Track Club launches scholarship program

(WXIA) -- Youth running groups, rejoice -- the Atlanta Track Club has created a scholarship program just for you.

The Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge will award scholarships to the three organizations that have the most children registered for the 2014 Peachtree Jr. or Lil' Peach Dash.

The first place team will be given a $1,500 scholarship, a $1,250 cash donation from the Atlanta Track Club and $250 in Sports Authority store credit. Two runners-up will each get $750 scholarships, $500 donations and $250 in Sports Authority credit.

"Through the Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge, we are able to give back to organizations that share our goal of inspiring children to be healthier and more active," Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Rich Kenah said in a release. "Atlanta Track Club is proud to partner with Sports Authority to offer these scholarships to provide extra motivation to keep kids moving."

AJC Peachtree Road Race lottery registration is now open. It will close Saturday, Mar. 22 at 11:59 p.m.

Those who are chosen for the race will be informed by Tuesday, Mar. 25.

ATLANTA – March 3, 2014:  Atlanta can expect more than 16,000 runners to hit the streets for the eighth annual Publix Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon, produced and presented by Life Time, The Healthy Way of Life Company (NYSE: LTM), on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at 7 a.m. The race course will travel through metro Atlanta’s most interesting and historic areas including the Sweet Auburn District, Inman Park, Decatur, Druid Hills, Virginia-Highland and Midtown.  Along the way, runners will pass landmarks including the King Historic Site, Carter Center, four college campuses and Piedmont Park.

Craig Kimbrel agrees to 4-year contract with Braves

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves have agreed with pitcher Craig Kimbrel to terms on a four-year contract, the team announced Sunday.

The agreement means Kimbrel and the Braves will not have to go into salary arbitration. Financial details were not released.

"We are very excited to agree to terms with Craig, who we feel is the best closer in Major League Baseball," Braves executive vice president and general manager Frank Wren said in a release. "He is one of the key pieces of our pitching staff, and we are happy to keep him in a Braves uniform for at least four more years."

The 25-year-old pitcher was named to the National League All-Star team in 2013 for the third year in a row. He is also the youngest pitcher in MLB history to notch 50 saves in a season, and is only 15 saves shy of John Smoltz's franchise record of 154 career rescues, according to the Braves.

Kimbrel was drafted by the Braves in 2008 and made his MLB debut during the 2010 season.

ATLANTA -- Calling all artists: the AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest is now accepting entries.

Designers have until Friday, Feb. 28 to submit their works of art. All entries will be whittled down to five finalists, which will be unveiled on ajc.com/peachtree on Saturday, Mar. 15.

No one will see the winning design until race day, when it will adorn tens of thousands of finishers' T-shirts.

"The AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest is a great way to showcase the work of our local artists, and we are always impressed with the entries we receive," Atlanta Track Club interim executive director Sue Payne said in a statement.

Whoever wins the contest receives $1,000, while each of the four finalists gets $100.

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Falcons have selected Legends Global Sales to oversee premium and season ticket sales at the team's new stadium scheduled to open by the beginning of the 2017 NFL season.

"Legends has a proven ability to tailor stadium seating options and amenities to serve the needs and desires of the local market," Falcons EVP - Chief Marketing & Revenue Officer Jim Smith said in a statement. "We look forward to partnering with the group as we work to finalize our offerings and begin the new stadium sales process later this year."

The Falcons said New York City-based LGS "will be responsible for all aspects of the sales strategy and execution for luxury suites, as well as for premium club seat and season ticket sales, including staffing, training, product creation and marketing."

Arthur Blank: Falcons will be in first place in 2014

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank says he has "complete confidence" that head coach Mike Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff will turn the team around next season.

Blank said Monday in his first public comments since the Falcons ended a disappointing 4-12 season, he has "every reason to believe we will go from last place to first place in 2014."

The Falcons started the 2013 season as a top Super Bowl favorite.

Atlanta Business Chronicle reported that Blank on Monday expressed "a big disappointment" in the team's 2013 season. Blank, who is the co-founder of Atlanta-based The Home Depot, said Monday during a press conference that he has spent the last several months focusing his energies on the future.
