ATLANTA -- The investigation into Atlanta Public Schools concluded that CRCT cheating occurred at F.L. Stanton Elementary School in 2009.
According to the investigative report, principal Marlo Barber and testing facilitator Theresa Bell stayed at school after classes ended to change students' answers from wrong to right.
Three Stanton teachers claimed they became suspicious when they saw Barber's and Bell's cars in the parking lot after hours during test week. One of them, Christi Giddens, told investigators that when she picked up her tests one morning, they were in a different order than when she turned them in the previous day. (74)
When asked about the cheating, Barber pleaded the Fifth Amendment. Bell denied that she stayed after school but did say that she was afraid of losing her teaching certificate.
The Governor's Special Investigators concluded that Barber and Bell changed students' answers, and that Giddens also cheated by telling students when they had the wrong answers to certain test questions. (75)
Esther C. Weems is now interim principal of Stanton Elementary.
