BET music director Buttahman visits Atlanta for A3C weekend | People
ATLANTA -- During the A3C weekend, BET added BET Music Matters Showcase to the weekend agenda; giving an audience to up and coming hip hop superstars, newcomer Kirko Bangz and ATL legend Big Boi. BET Music Director, Buttahman was busy the weekend making sure the brand was prominent during the A3C and scout for new talent in town for the weekend. During the festivities, Buttahman and I sat down for all you can eat sushi at Shout. During the lunch, Buttahman discussed his earlier broadcast years as well as how he became the music director for BET.
Way before MTV Jams, BET and Hood Fab; Buttahman interned for radio and television networks in the Maryland area. A graduate of Morgan State, Buttahman knew that in order to advance in his career he had to relocate. Holding the title as music director and on air talent in Maryland was not enough for this Virgin Island native. A true fan of hip hop and the intensity of being the music industry, MTV offered him a position that he couldn't refuse. From 2002 to 2008, he held the title as music and talent director and played a huge part in the creation and effective marketing of MTV Jams. With hit shows such as Hood Fab, Buttahman gained creditabilty in a market that would soon be hit by the recession. After a successful run at MTV Jams, he was laid off with many others and had to decide if this industry was his calling.
While laid off from MTV, Buttahman moved to Atlanta and created a name as a video director. Since he knew what the networks expected he was able to add creativity and industry standard work. In Atlanta he was able to redefine his mission and his craft. It wasn't long before BET had an opening that only 'he' could fill. In 2010, BET offered him the position of music director. Which meant he would oversee shows such as 106 & Park, Notarized Yearly Countdown and Video Campaigns/Selections. His daily task include: office work, creating marketing plans for video premiers, going to events, setting up hosting gigs and researching music.
Buttahman has several elements that he is looking to explore more. He recently wrote and directed a short entitled "Ex Encounters" and is looking to expand his brand as screen play writer, director and host. He discussed his need to expand who he is a man and talked about recently celebrating "National Come Out Day" on his www.allthingsbuttah.com blog. His blogs is centered around his life: music, politics and humor.
As an employee of the BET network, Buttahman understands the accountability the network has to maintain and is confident in their ability to break new talent such as Miguel, Elle Varner and Kendrick Lamar. With plenty in store, there is much to be expected of the fresh faces at BET.
