Official: Evacuation of Tabernacle was the right call

ATLANTA - 11Alive's Kevin Rowson spoke Sunday with the Atlanta Fire Marshal who made the decision to evacuate the Tabernacle during a concert Friday night. The marshal said Sunday that the decision to evacuate was the right one.

Lt. Ulysses Gladden said it was going to be a news story either way, and they chose the better outcome because the floor, with hundreds of screaming and bouncing fans, was going to give way.

There were actually two-by-six beams that had completely cracked from one side to the next, and you could see the brown wood in the beams as they opened up and closed up as the floor bowed," Gladden said.

Gladden radioed security and Tabernacle management and said there was only one call that could be made.

The only reason Gladden was at the Tabernacle Friday night was because one of the bands was using fake smoke as a special effect and that the fire alarms had to be turned.
