Former Morris Brown dorm heavily damaged in fire
News

ATLANTA (WXIA) -- Atlanta Fire crews were working a two-alarm blaze in an unoccupied building formerly owned by Morris Brown College, Thursday evening.

No injuries were immediately reported, but the fire sent thick smoke above the downtown area that could be seen for miles. Later, a firefighter suffered a minor physical injury.

Firefighters initially fought the fire, which they believe started on the third floor and spread to the fourth, by ladder truck but were later forced to pull crews out of the building due to safety concerns.

The amount of heavy timber used in the construction of the historic building is believed to have contributed to the strength of the blaze as it tore through it. Flames were reported to have soared has high as 20 feet during the height of the fire. Firefighters on the scene called the building a total loss.

In its history, the building, known as Gaines Hall, had been both a dorm and an administrative building at Morris Brown College. The building was later sold during a bankruptcy case to Invest Atlanta.
