Atlanta to host 2020 NCAA Final Four

(WXIA) – The NCAA announced the locations for five upcoming basketball Final Four tournaments, including Atlanta as host of the 2020 Final Four.

The committee selected five cities from among eight finalists. Atlanta's new stadium, now under construction in downtown Atlanta, will play host to the men's Final Four in 2020, -- marking the fifth time the national title game will be played in Atlanta. The 1977 Final Four was played in the Omni Stadium, while the 2002, 2007 and 2013 Final Four tournaments were played in te Georgia Dome.

The hosts for the 2015 and 2016 finals had been previously selected – Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis will host the 2015 Final Four, while the 2016 Final Four will be played at NRG Stadium in Houston.

University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona will host the Final Four in 2017, which makes the first western city to hold the tournament finals since the Final Four was held in Seattle in 1995.

San Antonio's Alamodome, which has hosted the finals three times previously, is the site for the 2018 Final Four. The 2019 Final Four will be played in the now-under-construction stadium in downtown Minneapolis, which, for now, is known as Vikings Stadium.

The committee's selections were only intended to run the four years through the 2020 Final Four, but during Friday's meeting, they opted to award the 2021 Final Four to Indianapolis, noting the special relationship that city has with the NCAA as the home of that organization.

"This certainly was a very competitive process, so selecting Indianapolis to host the 2021 Final Four presented the committee an opportunity to select four other cities for the original span of the bid cycle," said Dan Gavitt, NCAA vice president of men's basketball in a release. "The agreement we have with the city of Indianapolis provides flexibility to the site selection process, so any reasonable option that benefited the event while maintaining the integrity of the bid process for the other finalist cities was considered. The Indianapolis local organizing committee was receptive of the idea and assured us that they would be prepared with guarantees from the venues and local hotels."

Three other locations were considered for the five slots – New Orleans, North Texas and St. Louis.
