40 years after Roe v. Wade, abortion debate continues
WASHINGTON -- Forty years ago in a landmark case, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortions under most conditions.
Several thousand people turned out for a protest on the streets around the capitol in downtown Atlanta Tuesday.
Now, a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll finds a whopping 70 percent of Americans say that Roe v. Wade should not be overturned.
That's the highest percentage on the question since 1989.
About 54 percent of Americans also say abortion should be legal either always or most of the time.
The high court's decision on Roe v. Wade was handed down Jan. 22, 1973.
