Dragcon, NASCAR and College Football pack Atlanta for Labor Day | News
ATLANTA -- You've been warned: the perfect storm of traffic congestion is brewing in Atlanta this coming Labor Day weekend.
Those trying to travel out of town for the holiday will run into a lot of extra drivers on the road. Conservative crowd estimates place an extra half a million people in the area for several different events.
The Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau said those tourists will have an impact in excess of $70 million on the local economy.
Here are the numbers:
• Two football games at the Dome will draw 144,000 fans.
• Four home Braves games will draw about 140,000 fans.
• The Dragon Con sci-fi convention is expecting record attendance at 50,000.
• 104.7 The Fish's Celebrate Freedom Concert expects up to 60,000 attendees.
• The Decatur Book Festival and Black Gay Pride events are each planning for crowds of 70,000 people.
• The Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton is expecting 100,000 people at events throughout the weekend, including a Sunday night race.
A traffic consultant told the Atlanta Business Chronicle Atlanta's congestion will be the 9th worst in the nation this weekend. So if you need to travel through town, and can't avoid the city's traffic, there are a few safe windows.
Try to leave after lunch on Friday to avoid the evening rush hour crowds. Friday night at 7:30, a Braves game and college football game will start at the same time. You'll have to wait until after dark to avoid the major congestion.
If you want to wait until Saturday to leave, go as early as possible in the morning. Traffic will pick up again at noon, with more sports events Saturday afternoon and evening.
11Alive will be covering the events all Labor Day weekend long, and providing you the latest information on travel.
