Tennis stars, new courts coming to Atlanta

ATLANTA -- The last major tennis tournament before the Olympics will be held right here in Atlanta, as the BB&T Atlanta Open.

This year, it will be held downtown at Atlantic Station on brand new courts. Tournament Director Bob Bryant said that's a game changer.

"Atlanta's got one of the largest tennis participation communities in the entire country," Bryant said Monday. "And this has been huge to be able to move down into the city and be relevant really to the entire metro area."

Stars like Andy Roddick, John Isner and James Blake will be in town for the tournament. There will be 15 Olympians showcasing their skills before heading off to London. But perhaps the best present for Atlanta will be what's left after the event is over - several new tennis courts.

The courts seen from the highway north of 17th Street will be covered for future events. But plans underway now would have the courts south of 17th Street in use by a local college or the general public.

"So we'll all work together to determine the best use of [those courts] and how we can make it available to the public but also what's just the best use for tennis in Atlanta," Bryant said.
