Kym Whitley opens up about new OWN Network reality series 'Raising Whitley'

ATLANTA -- Kym Whitley is more character than most people would actually believe. This born and raised Midwesterner, knew that Ohio would not be the place she built her career. She ventured across the nation before naming Los Angeles the place to plant her career seed. Most know Kym as an big screen actresses and comedian, but with a recent opportunity with Oprah’s Network Kym has added reality show star to her roster.

Truly I adore the show one because of the concept. Her show is centered around her recent life change with the incorporation of a son into her daily routine. “Raising Whitley”, is a reality show that follows Kym as her life is challenged in a comical and cute way with the adoption of Joshua.Unlike most adoptions, Kym was not prepared for a baby nor was she considering one. Kym’s title as a mother happened all in one day. She received a phone call from the hospital stating that her baby was ready. Kym was unaware that a girl she had been mentoring gotten pregnant and named Kym Whitley as the official guardian for the child. So within hours she had to decide whether to raise a son or leave him to become a resident of the state’s orphan. Kym decision is obvious but it wasn’t easy in the beginning. Kym jokes about his first night home; she said it was chaotic so her parents came to the rescue and stayed up with him all night while Kym had to go gather her nerves over a glass of wine with friends. Kym may seem like a lot of fun, but hearing her stories of how her parents enforced success in her life, assures me that Joshua will be raised with greatness. As I was interviewing Kym, Joshua woke up and Kym began to talk about how she had to incorporate the “Village” to help raise and protect this young life. While “MaMa” has to go out and work, she has to have reliable people that understand her mission. So while we talked she had a friend there available to get Joshua dressed and feed while we continued on. Kym also shared stories about her first acting gig and how she couldn’t remember her lines and passed out. Her longevity in the industry has been protected by her code of honor to keep her word and be able to keep secrets amongst true Hollywood friends. Kym is a candid person that doesn’t sugarcoat her life and where it has lead her. Along with becoming a parent, Kym learned early the responsibilities and created dontfeedme.org. This is wonderful creation for parents with babies with allergies. The issues that Kym had with Joshua being allergic to certain things, created an idea that would help mothers abroad. Speciality shirts can now tell day cares and schools exactly what not to feed children without having to go in their file for health record information. This simple shirt can save many of lives who have severe allergic reactions. Kym has many things on her plate, but now she is focusing on being a mommy. Which is the greatest role a woman can ever take. Salute!
