Atlanta Mission will host a community Thanksgiving Dinner Wednesday 11/24 11am-4pm

Atlanta, GA--  Atlanta Mission will host a community Thanksgiving Dinner Wednesday, November 24 from 11 to 4 PM at the downtown location.  Volunteers will flood Atlanta Mission to cook and serve the traditional Thanksgiving meal to at least 400 homeless men.  The event and meal is open to the community. 

Community members in downtown Atlanta are invited to enjoy a meal, serve or take a tour of Atlanta Mission. 

Atlanta Mission is the city’s largest and longest-running provider of homeless services,  Atlanta Mission transforms, through Christ, the lives of those facing homelessness.  Atlanta Mission provides overnight shelter, temporary shelter, employment support, recovery programming and transitional housing for more than 950 homeless men, women and children daily.

Fulton County Recognizes World AIDS Day by Offering Free HIV Tests

Atlanta, GA--  In recognition of World AIDS Day, December 1, 2010, the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness encourages residents to take control and get tested to learn their status.  Fulton County comprises 10 percent of Georgia’s population and accounts for 54 percent of the state’s AIDS cases. 

Despite increases in the total number of people living with HIV in the United States in recent years, the annual number of new HIV infections has remained relatively stable. However, new infections continue at a far too high level, with an estimated 56,300 Americans becoming infected with HIV each year.  Take control, get tested.

On December 1, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., free HIV and Syphilis testing will be available at:

City Hall Paints itself Purple in support of Alzheimer's Awareness Month

Atlanta, GA--  Atlanta City Councilwoman Felicia Moore and the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will turn City Hall purple at 6pm 11/23.  The significance of the purple is to promote National Alzheimer’s Awareness and Caregiver Appreciation Month, the purple lights will surround the building every night for one week to honor caregivers and to bring awareness to the disease.

Councilmember Moore, who lost her father a few months ago to the disease, was instrumental in helping create Mattie's Call, a state-wide missing persons alert system for people with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or disabled adults who wander from home or care facilities. 

“I know from personal experience that caregiving offers many challenges,” said Moore.  “Caregivers give their time and energy to people who are being devastated by Alzheimer’s.

Estelle Performs at Delta's 'Travel in Pink' event to Raise Money for Grady Hospital

Atlanta, GA--  Travel in Pink, presented by Delta Air Lines, took place at the Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum, Hangar 2 and featured a Delta airplane as the centerpiece.  Grady and Delta teamed up to raise both awareness and much-needed funding for breast cancer research. The money raised will benefit Grady's Avon Foundation Comprehensive Breast Center.

The Georgian Terrace now Adds the Distinction as One of the Only Bicycle Friendly Hotels in Atlanta

Ryan Seacrest Hosts 2nd Annual Hearts and Hands Gala at the Georgia Aquarium

Atlanta, GA--  Ryan Seacrest, Gavin DeGraw, and Ronald McDonald all collaborated to help raise funds at the 2nd Annual Hearts and Hands gala.  The Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities provides a home away from home for families of seriously ill and injured children who must travel to receive treatment at Atlanta area children’s hospitals. Fulton County Gives Free Preventive Health Services for Adults at 2 Atlanta Clinics

Atlanta, GA--  SPARC Atlanta (Sickness Prevention Achieved through Regional Collaboration) clinics will bring preventive health services to Fulton County communities beginning Thursday, October 7, 2010.  The 2 remaining dates are November 3rd and 4th. 

SPARC Atlanta is an innovative approach to increasing preventive health care service use among underserved persons.  The clinics specifically target low-income older adults.
