3rd Annual Community Voices Freedom’s Voice Conference & Soledad O’Brien Freedom’s Voice Awards Gala

Atlanta, GA-- On Oct. 9, CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien and other luminaries will give voice to a population that risks falling through the cracks in healthcare reform: individuals reentering communities who have histories of mental illness or substance abuse.

O’Brien will join fellow CNN journalist Jamal Simmons at the 3rd annual Freedom’s Voice Conference, sponsored by Morehouse School of Medicine’s Community Voices program, to facilitate discussions with leading “re-entry” experts on how to address this urgent issue.

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King Historic Site; Free for All

Atlanta, GA--  Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site is celebrating its 30th anniversary on Sunday with a community Block Party that is free and open to the public. 

The Martin Luther King Center is one of Atlanta's most visited tourist destinations and they are looking forward to commemorating this major milestone with the community. More than 700,000 people visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site each year. The site was established by Congress on Oct. 10, 1980. Today, the site consists of more than 38 acres and includes 67 historic buildings, including Ebenezer Baptist Church, the home where the civil rights icon was born and the tomb of King and his wife, Coretta.

The event Sunday takes place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the King Historical Site.

Current Atlanta Opera Star to Host Masterclass

ATLANTA -- Tenor Bryan Hymel, who is currently starring as Rodolfo in the Atlanta Opera's production of La bohème, will host an opera masterclass in conjunction with the Georgia State University School of Music.

The class will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7 at the Aderhold Learning Center, Room 430 (60 Luckie Street, Atlanta, 30303). Admission is free.

Hymel has sung with the English National Opera, Dallas Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper and Wexford Festival Opera, among others. He was the first-prize winner of the 2008 Licia Albanese/Puccini Foundation Competition, the 2008 Loren L. Zachary Vocal Competition and the 2008 Giulio Gari Foundation Competition. La bohème marks his debut with the Atlanta Opera.

Mayor Kasim Reed Hosts a Rooftop Reception to Kick-Off Weeklong Atlanta Pride Festivities

Atlanta, GA--  Monday , October 4th marks the first day of Atlanta Pride Week and is getting a opening reception party at City hall tonight.

Mayor Kasim Reed and Councilmember Alex Wan will host a rooftop reception Monday evening at City Hall to kick-off the weeklong festivities celebrating Atlanta Pride’s 40th anniversary.  Mayor Reed will be at several Pride events this week and will march in the parade on Sunday, October 10.

Atlanta Hip Hop Fans packed the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center to see The BET Award Show

Atlanta, GA--  This past Saturday night BET held its 5th annual 2010 BET Hip-Hop Awards here at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center. What was billed as a "salute to the best of the best in hip hop culture," the show organizers and performers did not let its fans down.  The stage was alive with special effects and fireworks, while the multitude of performances seemed to be non-stop as 1 after another artist came to stage to perform their hit song.

Performers included The Diplomats, B.o.B, Soulja Boy, Waka Flocka, J. Cole and Gucci Mane.  The best performance and the opening performance of the night was Rick Ross with P. Diddy and DJ Khalid. It immediately set the mood in the Civic Center and had everyone on their feet. Big winners of the night were Nicki Minaj and Jay Z.
