Inmates, officers hurt in fight at Atlanta jail

ATLANTA -- Several inmates and officers were injured in a fight at the Atlanta City Detention Center Wednesday afternoon.

It happened at around 1 p.m. during a routine cell search.

Atlanta Department of Corrections spokesperson Ashanti Moore said an officer noticed contraband inside a cell housing two federal inmates. When the officer entered the cell to confiscate it, the inmates attacked the officer.

A second officer tried to get involved, which caused several more inmates to join the fight, Moore said.

The officer who was attacked was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with injuries to the neck and back. Two more officers received minor injuries and a supervisor suffered a cut to the lip, according to Moore.

One federal inmate sustained mouth injuries and was taken to Grady, while three more inmates reported minor injuries.

Moore said the housing unit where the fight occurred is on lockdown Thursday.
