Fulton County observes Fire Prevention Week

ATLANTA -- Fulton County’s Fire Rescue Department is holding several events in the community as a part of Fire Prevention Week, October 6-12, 2013. This year’s theme is “Prevent Kitchen Fires!”

According to the National Fire Protection Association, two of every five home fires start in the kitchen. Residents are encouraged to learn more about how they can prevent kitchen fires.

Join Fulton Fire Rescue at one of the following events:

  • Monday, October 7 – 10 a.m. - 1p.m., Harriet G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility.  Event will include the Fire Engine, Information Booth, and Fire Safety House Demonstration. 

 

  • Tuesday, October 8 – 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.-  Southwest Regional Library, Information Booth Fire Truck Demonstration.

Fulton's Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility to Celebrate 11 Years of Fellowship and Fun

The Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility will celebrate 11 years of fellowship and fun for Fulton County Seniors.  The Friends of Mills will host a luncheon on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 beginning at 12:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Hall. Following the luncheon, participants will enjoy trivia games and cake. The Fulton County facility, named for Atlanta native and community activist Helene S. Mills, opened on Tuesday, September 17, 2002.   The Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility is located at 515 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia. 

Open from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, the facility offers a low cost breakfast and lunch, classes and social activities, aerobics/arthritis therapy, aquatics and other services that enrich the minds, bodies and spirits of seniors age 55 and over.  All Fulton County seniors are eligible to use the facility regardless of where they live.

5,000 Fulton residents eat their veggies in 2013 thanks to Fulton Fresh

ATLANTA -- The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmers Market marked the end of its successful third season on August 28 with a community celebration attended by more than 200 residents.

“This has been our most successful year so far,” said Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “We were able to provide nutrition education and fresh produce to approximately 5,000 residents living in communities with limited access to mainstream grocery stores.”

Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmers Market ends third season Aug. 28

ATLANTA -- On Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m., Fulton County Cooperative Extension will celebrate the successful third season of the Fresh Mobile Farmers Market. This year alone, the program provided 19.2 tons of fresh produce to more than 4,800 residents in 16 Fulton County communities. . 

The celebration will take place at Mount Vernon Baptist Church located at 441 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW, and is open to all residents.

Fulton Fresh was founded in 2011 as part of Fulton County’s continuous effort to address health disparities. Communities served by the seasonal program benefit from the delivery of fresh produce, nutrition education and were taught how to prepare tasty, healthy meals with the produce they receive. 

Information about Cooperative Extension and other county services will be available as well as healthy treats and fresh produce from the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market.

America's 'Night Out' against crime

ATLANTA -- The Fulton County Police Department, in partnership with Fulton County agencies and local neighborhoods are joining forces with thousands of communities across the nation to celebrate and participate in the 30th annual National Night Out, a crime and drug prevention event.

Fulton County residents are invited to join the Fulton County Police Department at their National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at 5495 Old National Highway, College Park.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime awareness and support for crime and drug prevention efforts sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are working together and fighting back against crime.

Atlanta-Fulton Public Library system to create time capsule

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta-Fulton Public is asking for help in making a time capsule over the summer. 

The time capsule will be for the Perry Holmes Library on Bolton Rad. The library team wants to open the time capsule as it moves to a new location in February 2015. 

As part of the time capsule, the library staff asks for Atlanta and Fulton County residents to give small items, those that can be parted with for around two years. Those donations are due August 1, and the capsule will close the next day. All ages can participate.
