City of Atlanta Assists Ansley Park Recognition as Top 10 Greatest Neighborhood in USA

The City of Atlanta today announced the designation of Ansley Park as one of 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2011 under the American Planning Association’s (APA) Great Places in America program. APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value. The City’s Department of Planning and Community Development’s Office of Planning assisted the community in submitting the nomination.

APA singled out Ansley Park for its verdant open spaces, covering nearly a third of the neighborhood; compact design, allowing residents to shop, work and play close to home; array of architecturally distinguished dwellings; and citizens, who continuously strive to maintain the area’s charm and diversity.

“Ansley Park is well deserving of this national recognition and I would like to thank the American Planning Association for this honor,” said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.  “This community is one of many examples in the City of Atlanta of what can happen when residents, businesses and civic leaders are engaged in making their community better for future generations. The success that Ansley Park enjoys today is a direct result of the neighborhood’s carefully crafted original design, decades of consistent advocacy by its residents, and thoughtful city planning for the future.”

Through Great Places in America, APA recognizes unique and exemplary streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces – three essential components of all communities. These authentic places have been shaped by forward thinking planning that showcases diverse architectural styles, promotes community involvement and accessibility, and fosters economic opportunity.

“We are pleased to receive this distinguished recognition in partnership with the Ansley Park neighborhood,” said Commissioner James Shelby, Department of Planning and Community Development. “Ansley Park is one of the many gems in the City of Atlanta that has endured change and overcome challenges that make it the community it is today.”
